How to Write a Check

In as much as the banking sector has seen a very great deal of technological advancements, and wired transfer being the new craze for payment both for big companies and a single individual, Checks are still viable. They are still used to make payments, receive payments, and even salaries from your workplace. For the sake of those still using this method of payment, let’s take a guide on how to properly write a check;

How to properly write a check;

Payee (Pay to the order of)

In this section, you are to fill in the name of the person, or organization you want to pay out the money to. This has to be very correct and some banks request IDs when paying checks.

Amount (Numerical and in words)

The box to fill in the amount Numerically is located on the right side of the check. write the amount Numerically (0000), and make sure you fill-up the available space, to avoid an unauthorized addition of digits to the amount.

The box for writing in words is located just below the ‘Payee’ space. Make sure that what you are filling in words tallies with what is in the Numerical Box.


In the upper right hand, fill in the date that you wrote the check. this is very important for records and tracking.


This is a very important piece in the check, it is what validates the check. The space for signing is situated in the bottom right corner of the check.No signature, No payment.


This is generally a space to include notes(eg; social security number). This is not necessary, but it is advised.

Three  important numbers in a check

Before you start writing any check, cross-check to make sure that these 3 numbers are correct, most especially for new checkbooks.

Account number

This is the account number of the bank account, from which the check was issued.

Routing Number

This is a nine-digit number, which is specific to every bank. It is a form of identification numbers for banks.

Check number

Each check booklet is numbered twice, One on the upper right corner and one after the account number. Make sure that these numbers are in order as you tear the check to avoid missing booklets and possibly fraud.

Always keep a record of your written checks in a register which is received alongside the checkbook. You can also make yours. Check registers can be used to track your cheques if need be. Easily detect fraud in your bank account. Balance your account.

Things to fill in your check register

  • The date you write the check
  • Check number
  • A memo or who you wrote the check to
  • The amount that was paid

Endorsing a check

This involves signing the check at the space provided in the back for endorsement by the Payee. This is to make sure that the person the money is being paid to, is the original recipient of the check. The name provided as the payee and that of the endorser must tally if not, rewrite the correct name/spelling and sign below it.  Be careful not to sign beyond the space provided.
